Surface Reader
Olesya Ilenok
Surface Reader is a DIY device that allows users to extract sounds from their surroundings. The device is battery-powered, portable and worn on the wrist. During the workshop, participants will be able to assemble their own device in a simple way: without soldering, using only hot glue and connecting wires. The workshop is accessible to all skill levels and does not require any knowledge of electronics.
After assembly, all participants gather together for a collective practice with their devices and a joint exploration of the surfaces of the environment. Using a contact microphone, it is possible to listen to the different textures sounding from the device, from tree bark to asphalt.
Surface Reader helps to see reality from a new perspective, shifting the focus of attention from visual perception of the environment to sound.
Each participant can keep their device for further experiments.
