Writing Interactive Fiction with Ink
Florence Walker
Discover the Ink Narrative Scripting Language—a simple yet powerful tool for creating interactive fiction. While Ink has a thriving creative community, it remains less well-known than tools like Twine, and this workshop aims to change that by introducing it to a wider audience.
Designed for beginners, this session requires little to no coding experience. We’ll start with an introduction to Ink, showcasing examples of work created with the language, before exploring its unique strengths and limitations compared to other interactive fiction platforms. You’ll then learn the essentials—such as knots and diverts, variables, and basic logic—before moving on to more advanced techniques like tunnelling and customising your story’s presentation with CSS.
In the final part of the workshop, you’ll have time to create your own short Ink story, with the facilitator on hand to offer guidance, answer questions, and troubleshoot any technical issues. You’ll leave with a working prototype, the skills to continue developing it, and the confidence to explore interactive storytelling further.
